My four weeks at Lindau last summer would definitely rank as one of the best cultural, academic and social experiences I have ever had.

I booked this language course with the main aim of increasing my oral fluency whilst at the same time working on my written German (which I feel can often be neglected if time is spent holidaying or even working in the country of your target language). These aims were certainly met but the rewards of the course far surpassed my expectations?on all levels! Dialoge structures classes in a way that sustains both academic motivation and personal interest. This is achieved with skilled and dedicated teachers and staff who take an equal interest in every individual and create a relaxed atmosphere in which participation through German comes naturally whatever the activity - drama, political/cultural discussion, presentations, mini projects or even grammar! This wide range of activities ensured both fun and academic benefit, namely the build up of new, useful and varied vocabulary.

I stayed in student apartments on the island. These were located a mere two minutes from the school but location is far from their only advantage. The atmosphere amongst students staying there was really great, warm and open. As our backgrounds and nationalities were so diverse, the means of communication was always German and no matter the standard of the individual, best efforts would always be made to ensure understanding (this proved especially fun and amusing at particular times such as during the weekly game of Pictionary?cameras essential!) The school organised great extra-curricular activities such as cinema evenings, evenings of international or traditional German cuisine, trips to Meersburg (amazing!), Mainau, Bregenz, Munich and Constance to name but a few. Exploring the island itself is also a must. Lindau is one of the most picturesque and atmospheric places I have ever had the pleasure of discovering. Cobbled streets, old stone fountains, ornate architecture?The local nightlife is great and there are also great shopping and sunbathing facilities in the area.

The worst moments of my month at Lindau were most definitely those leading up to my return home! Leaving both teachers and friends, not to mention the place itself was tough but I shall most definitely return to Lindau and remain in touch with those who helped to make my time there so special. I could not recommend the Lindau experience more highly and now as I more confidently approach my 3rd level German exams in Dublin, my only advice to those contemplating the course would be to book now and?
